French Polynesia's 118 islands are the remains of volcanoes that were born some 20 million years ago. These islands either remained mountainous (the Society Islands
and the Marquesas and Austral Islands), or they became atolls, like most of the Tuamotu Archipelago. Spread out over an ocean
surface equivalent to that of Western Europe, these islands and atolls contain a population whose culture reflects both their
isolation and their history.
